The hectic schedule of the international and club football as well as fan abuse has taken another victim in the form of Asamoah Gyan, the striker for the Ghana National Football Team, who has announced his retirement from the international scene.
The 26 year old striker, who currently plays in the United Arab Emirates with Al Ain, on loan from the English Premier Club Sunderland Association Football Club sent an e-mail regarding his unavailability for international selection to the Ghana Football Association or the GFA and this, was confirmed by the officials late on Saturday evening.
According to the e-mail sent to the GFA, Gyan wrote that his family and his friends had fully supported the decision to retire from the international team, which was sent on Friday. He also narrated in detail how he had grown frustrated at the abuse he had received from the fans while on duty at the African Cup of Nations last month while playing for the Ghana National Football Team and cited it as one of the main reasons for his retirement.
Moreover, the statement from the GFA also stated that everything was one on its part to make the striker reconsider his decision to retire but to no avail. The striker, who has scored 28 goals in 59 appearances for The Black Stars, stated that the fan abuse that was targeted at him after the Ghanaians exited from the tournament was intolerable and he vowed that he would never play for the national team again.
Gyan became the number one public enemy in his country after he missed a penalty in the semi-final 1-0 loss at the hands of eventual champions Zambia and Gyan, who gave his heart out for the Ghana National Football Team for almost 9 years wants to concentrate on his club career from now on.
