The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that the country will be introducing a League Super Cup in Division One, making it a new competition for the football league ahead of the 2020-21 football season. The announcement comes after some series of deliberations and meetings among stakeholders and other members of the association which underwent a prolonged process.
It has now been confirmed that every club that plays in the Division One will all be participating in the cup competition next season and preparations have gone underway to implement the necessary guidelines and strategies to enforce a hitch-free process.
The Super Cup competition will see five different clubs participate in it. First, there will be three clubs who would be the eventual winners of each of the three zones in the football league and then the other two teams who finished the season better than the others. The first meeting regarding the matter was held on Wednesday, the 10th of February 2021 in Accra and there have since been up to about three other meetings held as the parties involved were determined to arrive at the most suitable guidelines and directives that will be dished out to the concerned teams in the football league.
At the meeting, it was discussed that the reason for establishing the Super Cup is so that football clubs in the division will have the opportunity to participate in more games than the regular football league games.
The maximum number of games played by the Division One teams is 30 in the league plus a further seven which are played in the MTN FA Cup competition. Of the three different zones, the teams who come out on top as winners will seal automatic qualification for the Ghana Premier League, as confirmed by the GFA.
