Ghana League Club Association (GHALCA) boss Kudjoe Fianoo has shocked the football community when he resigned from an interim five member committee set up by the government. The committee was tasked with overseeing the football administration in the country as part of a restructuring attempt.
Fianoo explained that he opted to separate himself from the activities of the committee to avoid possible conflict between the association he chairs and the work of the said committee. He was appointed the general secretary of the committee that included Abedi Pele, three-time African Player of the Year. Football legend Rev. Osei Kofi, journalist and lawyer Eva Okyere were also members. The committee was chaired by the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of CAN 2008 Dr Kofi Amoah.
The committee was part of the resolution of the Ghanaian government in response to an embarrassing investigative documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas which allegedly captured the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi receiving bribes. The GFA boss had to be banned by world football governing body FIFA for 90 days and he opted to resign from his post.
Fianoo said he would have loved to contribute his quota in cleaning up the country’s football affairs but he needed to “weigh the pros and cons of the appointment” while considering his current job as GHALCA chairman.
Truly, if the committee needed to check the activities of the league clubs, Fianoo might be compromised as their chairman. He said he has assured the members of the association of his leadership and is commitment to serve their best interests. The government is expected to name a replacement in a few days.
